Beep, beep...

I'd like to bring everyone a quick report on the BEEP (Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program) initiative.

BEEP is a program that is providing roughly 50,000 bicycles to school children, teachers and volunteers in rural Zambia. The program is aimed at directly helping children escape the risks of extreme poverty, one of them being exposure to HIV/AIDS. BEEP is accomplishing this by providing safe and reliable access to school, which is known to have a direct and positive effect on the likelihood of a child completing their secondary education.

From June 2009 to March 2010 2,590 bicycles were distributed to students, 590 bicycles were distributed to teachers and community supporters and 77 field mechanics were trained. The initial outcomes of these measures were direct reports from local girls that they feel safer during their commute to and from school and teachers reported that children are arriving to school on time and are attentive in class (no doubt due to the fact that they're not exhausted from walking for hours and hours!!!).

We all know that education is a key ingredient to success and it is even more acutely missed in circumstances of extreme poverty. By providing access to education, all of you, who have donated, have directly improved these children's access to opportunity, education and well-being.

Thank you!
